Baton Rouge Food Bank: City Citrus Pick Event 2016

Join Baton Rouge Green with your friends, family, and community for our 3rd annual City Citrus Pick Event on December 10th, 2016!

Each year, we pair volunteer pickers with residential citrus trees that would go unpicked if not for this event. Last year, 39 volunteers harvested and donated over 5,300 lbs of citrus in only a half day. Come out and help us best this number in 2016! This is a great event for all ages!

Fruit Pickers will meet with the Baton Rouge Green Team at the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank for breakfast and coffee at 8:30a.m., where we will learn about Baton Rouge’s premier food pantry and its recovery in the wake of the recent flooding.

After breakfast, all participants will be broken into groups according to ability to transport larger quantities of fruit to the nearest drop-off point. These drop-off points help free up the pickers while making this event flow more smoothly. They are made possible by the generosity of Baton Rouge’s very own, Bofinger's Tree Service LLC, sponsor of Pick Event 2016.

Go to the website, batonrougegreen.com to sign up as a volunteer or register your fruit tree!

As always, #ShareTheFruit

Share the Bounty: Food Bank Fundraiser and Silent Auction

The Ogden Park Civic Association and Radio Bar invite you to Share The Bounty: A Flood Of Giving!

Come out for a silent auction benefiting the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank! The silent auction will close at 7pm. You must be present to win.

It is once again time for friends and family to gather over holiday food and drink. During this festive season, we ask you to join Ogden Park Civic Association in our second annual Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank fundraiser and silent auction. This year’s flood has created an even greater need for assistance in Baton Rouge.

During the floods, the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank felt the full force of this disaster. Their warehouse and offices took on four feet of water, resulting in the loss of delivery vehicles, refrigeration units and 1 million pounds of food.

This year we will collect cash donations and have a silent auction to raise funds to assist in the rebuild of this great Baton Rouge institution. Please join us at the Radio Bar on December 4th for some free food, courtesy of Radio Bar, and help us provide meals to the 76,000 (17.2%) East Baton Rouge residents who are food insecure.

Stay tuned for information about the goodies that will be up for auction!

Cranksgiving 2015

Cranksgiving is a food drive on two wheels. Part bike ride, part food drive, part scavenger hunt. It begun in New York City in 1999 and has since spread out across the United States. In 2015, we're bringing Cranksgiving to Baton Rouge.

You'll need to bring a bike, a way to carry your goods (basket, bags etc.) and about $20. A lock is highly recommended. We'll hand out a list of food items and stores, you'll have to pick your routes and get to those stores and back with the goods.

We'll have winners based on best (and worst!) times in several categories, plus shortest and longest distance, and highest and lowest dollar totals. Maybe some others if we get creative.

Registration is free, and the food items you bring back will be donated to the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank.

1:00 PM - Registration Opens
1:45 PM - Registration Closes
1:50 PM - Shopping Lists handed out, rules explained.
2:00 PM - Cranksgiving BEGINS!
4:45 PM - Cranksgiving ENDS
5:00 PM - Cranksgiving Dinner/Beverages/Awards, location TBD

Cranksgiving is only a race if you want it to be. Come and do it at your own pace, or just come hang out, have a good time and be part of a good cause.

There will be five stores to hit, and a maximum distance of about 15 miles. You get to choose your route, however, so we won't be responsible if you end up in Central.

We'll need one or two volunteers to assist at the Start and Finish. I'd also like someone to help with designing and printing the shopping lists. Maybe a volunteer to host the after-party, though we may also just end up at Chelsea's. Hit me up below or send me a message if you want to help out.

This is a public event - anyone on a human powered vehicle can enter.
