Music & Movies on the Lawn @ Baton Rouge Gallery

BRG's Movies & Music on the Lawn continues this month against the backdrop of BREC's City Park. Over the past 18 years, the summer film series has paired up dozens of iconic silent films with the best local, contemporary bands in our area. Each band performs a never-before-heard score for the film, which is projected on a huge inflatable screen on the lawn behind the gallery.

The screenings, which take place towards the end of the month begin at 8 p.m. (or sundown – whichever comes last) and the $7 price of admission includes free bottomless popcorn.

This year's series, is once again presented by Whole Foods Market, and in honor of BRG's 50th anniversary, we'll be celebrating a few of the very best pairings of bands and films from the program's recent history.

On July 30, sponsored by The Grind, Fritz Lang’s epic “Metropolis” returns to the Movies & Music screen. When the film first debuted in 1927, it was among the first feature-length sci-fi films and today is regarded, as Roger Ebert once put it, as “one of the great achievements of the silent era, a work so audacious in its vision and so angry in its message that it is, if anything, more powerful today than when it was made."

The film is set in a futuristic urban dystopia and follows Freder (the wealthy son of the city's ruler) and Maria (a poor worker, played by Brigette Helm) and their attempts to overcome the gulf separating the classes of their city. Much of the plot line of Metropolis stems from the First World War and the culture of the Weimar Republic in Germany while exploring themes of industrialization and mass production.

Providing the score for the film, as he did in 2012, will be digital musician Matsy. Well-known in Baton Rouge as a DJ performing at venues like The Spanish Moon, The Varsity Theatre and The State, having also played at BRG’s Surreal Salon Soiree.
